What does it detect?
It is present during embryonic development at the Ca 125 level of the coelomic epithelium and in the amniotic fluid in the blood. It is found in a high percentage of ovarian tumours of epithelial origin and can be detected in the serum of women with invasive primary ovarian cancer.
Therefore, the marker level can indicate a certain type. It helps the oncologist decide what treatment or combination will work best for a certain type of disease and evaluate how well any treatment works. Sometimes, the marker is used for screening to help detect a certain type of cancer in people at high risk before they have signs or symptoms.

In range results:
Healthy females are expected to have a value below 35 U/mL in the serum.
Out-of-range results:
Any value above 35 U/mL is considered abnormal. Those with elevated levels may be at risk for disease.
