Medical information

Many germs live harmlessly in our body. Occasionally, a suitable condition can cause these germs to thrive and grow, causing inflammation or infection. Thrush is caused by an infection of a yeast called candida.

In women, vaginal thrush can occur due to vagina being warm and wet in which these yeast prefer. Although it is more commonly associated in women, men can also get thrush. In men, thrush can also cause inflammation of the penis.

Our body contains natural defences against small amount of candida present in our body. However, under certain conditions these defences can be weakened, causing symptoms of thrush:

  • being pregnant
  • having diabetes
  • taking antibiotics
  • having weakened immune system, such as undergoing chemotherapy for cancers or taking high dose steroids

Symptoms

Common symptoms of mild vaginal thrush include:

  • Itch or soreness of skin folds outside vagina
  • creamy white, thick discharge from the vagina
  • painful to pass urine or have sex

Common symptoms of mild thrush in men include:

  • irritation, burning or itching on the tip of penis
  • redness on the tip of penis
  • creamy white, thick discharge from the penis
  • difficulty pulling back the foreskin of penis

Treatment for thrush

Medicinesbymailbox Pharmacy provides the most widely used types of capsules and creams to treat thrush.

Fluconazole capsules, a type of anti-fungal medicine can be prescribed to help treat thrush.

Topical treatment with a class of drugs called imidazoles are also available in different forms:

Please visit the individual treatment page for specific product information before ordering these medicines.

Thrush in women is usually treated with vaginal tablet or cream inserted in the vagina and creams applied to the skin around the entrance to the vagina.

Alternatively single-dose Fluconazole can be used to treat thrush. It may be more effective in some cases as it works on the whole body. It is possible to use both capsules and creams or pessaries at the same time.

Thrush in men is usually treated by applying imidazole cream to the head of the penis. Thrush in men can also be treated by taking the same single-dose Fluconazole capsules.

If thrush symptoms have not resolved within 10 days medical advice should be sought.
