Many germs live harmlessly in our body. Occasionally, a suitable condition can cause these germs to thrive and grow, causing inflammation or infection. Thrush is caused by an infection of a yeast called candida.
In women, vaginal thrush can occur due to vagina being warm and wet in which these yeast prefer. Although it is more commonly associated in women, men can also get thrush. In men, thrush can also cause inflammation of the penis.
Our body contains natural defences against small amount of candida present in our body. However, under certain conditions these defences can be weakened, causing symptoms of thrush:

Alternatively single-dose Fluconazole can be used to treat thrush. It may be more effective in some cases as it works on the whole body. It is
possible to use both capsules and creams or pessaries at the same time.

taking the same single-dose Fluconazole capsules.

Have you or your partner had exposure to sexually transmitted disease?
Your symptoms may be caused by an infection other than thrush. Please see your regular doctor or a genito-urinary service. We are unable to prescribe thrush treatment for you.

Are you taking the antihistamine terfenadine or the prescription medicine cisapride?
These drugs interact with fluconazole. We are unable to prescribe thrush treatment for you.

For women: are you pregnant, or intending to become pregnant or breast-feed, and take fluconazole single dose tablet?
Men should answer 'No'.Pregnant/breastfeeding women who do not intend to request fluconazole tablet from Dr Fox should answer 'No'.
Fluconazole single dose tablet is not recommended in pregnancy or whilst breast feeding. Creams and pessaries, however can be used in pregnancy and whilst breast feeding. We are unable to prescribe fluconazole for you.
