Morning after pill

Be prepared with Levonelle or ellaOne standby morning after pill. Emergency contraception to keep in reserve for when you need it.

Details

Medical information

Most women need emergency contraception at some points of ther life. Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC), known as 'morning after pill', is used within 3-5 days of having unprotected sex. It can be used if you have had sex without contraception, or if there is a mistake with your usual contraceptive method (eg. split condom or missed contraceptive pills).

Although EHC is effective, it does not replace your usual contraceptive pills and should not be used long term. Sometimes, a non-hormonal method of emergency contraception is used, such as to insert an IUCD (intrauterine contraceptive device) up to 5 days after unprotected sex. It is more effective than the morning after pill and your doctor can provide you more advice on this.

Choice of Morning After Pill and Effectiveness

Medicinesbymailbox offers 2 types of morning after pill: Levonelle (levonorgestrel 1.5mg) and ellaOne (30mg ulipristal acetate). They are both single dose morning after pills.

Women who are eligible can request 1 or 2 doses of a 'morning after pill' to keep as a standby treatment for use when needed. Levonelle and ellaOne should not be taken together.

If taken correctly, emergency contraception can be very effective, depending on the type of morning after pill you are taking and how early you start to take it after unprotected sex, as they are only effective if taken before the egg is released from the ovary.

EllaOne is slightly more effective than Levonelle. It is shown that EllaOne remains effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse while Levonelle has to be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after intercourse.

If you vomit within 2 hours of taking Levonelle or 3 hours of taking EllaOne, you may have to take another dose.

Note: You may be required to fill in a series of Yes/No questionnaires to determine your suitability to the medication. Please visit the individual treatment page for specific product information.

Regular contraceptive pills are also available from Medicinesbymailbox.
