Medical information

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a long term condition of the bowel. It is common and can affect anyone at any age. Women are often more affected than men. It is not usually a serious condition but can cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

The exact cause of IBS in unknown. However, it is thought to be associated to overactivity of the gut.

Symptoms
Symptoms and severity of IBS vary from person to person but the most common symptoms include:
  • pain, bloating and discomfort in different parts of the tummy
  • Diarrhoea, constipation or both
  • feeling of not emptying the back passage after going to the toilet
  • urgent need to go to the toilet quickly

Note: passing blood is not a symptom of IBS and should be investigated further by a doctor.

You may need to have a few tests, such as examination of your tummy, blood or stool tests, to confirm your diagnosis of IBS and to rule out other more serious conditions of the gut.

Treatments

IBS is not curable but treatments can help to ease symptoms and improve quality of life.

Many people with mild symptoms do not need treatment. Simple lifestyle changes such as exercise, managing stress level and identifying food triggers can help with the condition.
