Medical information

Eczema, or dermatitis, is the inflammation of the skin. Atopic eczema is the most common form of eczema, which means that people have certain allergic tendencies. They are also more likely to have other atopic diseases, such as asthma or hay fever, which are also related to allergies. It usually starts in early childhood and most children grow out of it by their teens.

The exact cause of eczema is unknown but it is shown that in eczema, the oily barrier that protects your skin tends to be reduced. This leads to increase in water loss from your skin and can cause symptoms of eczema.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of eczema are:
  • Dry skin
  • Red and inflamed skin in some areas, particularly skin folds such as front of elbow, back of knees and around the neck
  • Itchy, blistered or weepy affected skin

Flare-ups usually come and go. The severity and duration of flare-ups vary from person to person.

Treatment

There is no cure for eczema but moisturisers and steroid creams or ointments are commonly used to control the symptoms.

When inflammation flares up, eczema is usually treated with steroid creams or ointments. They come in different strengths and are available from GPs. A short course (7-14 days) of mild topical steroid such as hydrocortisone 1% is usually able to reduce the inflammation. If there is no improvement, a stronger steroid might be prescribed but they might cause greater side effects, such as damage on the skin. Medicinesbymailbox does not supply steroids for eczema treatment.

To prevent eczema flaring up, you should use a good moisturiser every day to protect the skin from becoming dry and coming into contact with irritants. Dry skin may promote flare ups. You may need to apply moisturisers for several times a day, depending on how dry your skin feels.

There are many types of moisturisers or emollients on prescription and over the counter. There are different types of emollients, such as soap substitutes, emollient bath additives and emollient creams or lotions. They can leave the skin slightly greasy as the oil protects the skin. We provide some which are routinely prescribed by NHS skin specialists. For specific information on each moisturiser, please visit individual treatment page.

It is important to use bland and unperfumed moisturisers as fragrance may irritate your skin and make your eczema worse.

Prevention

In addition to using moisturiser regularly, you should avoid potential triggers or irritants that can make your eczema worse.

Some common triggers or irritants are:

  • soaps or bubble baths
  • biological washing powders, detergents and fabric conditioners
  • materials like wool which can be irritating to some people
  • house dust mite
  • food allergy
