Cystitis treatment

Trimethoprim, an antibiotic used for the treatment of cystitis (urine infection), is available from Medicinesbymailbox Pharmacy.

Details

Trimethoprim 200mg

Medical information

Cystitis is caused by the inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by an infection. Women are more likely to have cystitis as the tube that passes out urine from the bladder (the urethra) is shorter in women that allows bacteria passage to the bladder. It is unclear that what exactly causes cystitis but it is thought to be associated with factors such as having sex, wiping your bottom from back to front when you go to the toilet and using a diphragm for contraception.

Symptoms

Symptoms can vary from person to person but in general, they are:

  • pain and stinging when passing urine
  • needing to pee more often
  • urine that is dark, cloudy and strong smelling
  • pain in your lower tummy
  • feeling unwell and tired

Diagnosis

Your doctor can make a simple urine dipstick test to see whether you are infected with cystitis, as other conditions can also cause discomfort and pain when you pass urine.

Treatment
Mild cases of cystitis often resolve on its own. However, those with recurrent cystitis will be treated by antibiotics such as trimethoprim. A 3 to 5-day course of trimethoprim is a common treatment and is able to clear up the infection for most women. Symptoms will usually improve after about 1 day of treatment.

Trimethoprim is available from the Medicinesbymailbox Pharmacy.

Prevention

If you have recurrent cystitis, some measures may be useful to help prevent the infection from reoccurring.

  • Using soap- and fragrance-free products around your genitals
  • Going to the toilet as soon as you need to pee
  • Drinking plenty of water
  • Wiping from the front to the back when you go to the toilet
  • Wearing underwear made of cotton instead of synthetic materials
