Medical information

Cold sores are sores on the lips caused by a type of virus called Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). It is sometimes called the 'kissing disease' as it is commonly passed on by skin-to-skin contact such as being kissed by an infected people.

Symptoms

Some infected people do not show symptoms as the virus stays inactive in your nerves. When activated, it grows and causes blisters around the mouth. Some possible triggers that cause the virus to be activated include:

  • Illness, such as a cold or a flu can weaken your immune system
  • Menstruation
  • Stress
  • Tiredness
  • Exposure to strong sunlight and wind

For cold sores, the skin often tingles and burns for few hours up to a day before the blisters, usually sore, appear. It may weep and form scabs after several days. The scabs will usually heal on its own, leaving no scar. People who have had cold sores before usually recognise the symptoms, mainly because the sores come up in exactly the same place each time.

If you have sores that are different from this, it may be caused by other medical conditions such as impetigo. If you are unsure, you should check with a doctor or a pharmacist.

Treatment

Cold sores will usually heal on its own after about 7-10 days. However, some cold sores can be tender and painful. You may wish to speed up the healing process by using antiviral tablets and cream, such as Aciclovir, which is available from Medicinesbymailbox Pharmacy.

Self-care

If you have cold sores (blisters) which are extremely infective, you should:
  • Avoid kissing anyone or allow anyone from touching the sore, particularly babies and people with weaker immune system such as AIDS and chemotherapy patients.
  • Avoid sharing any personal items, such as towels and toothbrush, with another person
  • Avoid touching or picking at the sore or scab
  • Wash your hand with soap and water after touching your sore or applying antiviral cream to avoid spreading infection to other areas
