Medical information

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a germ called Chlamydia trachomatis. In women, the infection usually affects the womb and in men, it usually affects the urinary pipe (the urethra) in the penis. Chlamydia can also cause infections in other parts of the body, such as the eye, throat and lungs. It is caused by having sex or coming into contact with the semen or vaginal fluids of an infected person. The risk of being infected increases with an increasing change of sexual partner.

Symptoms
Majority of infected people have no symptoms. People can have chlamydia without realising for a long period of time. If symptoms do occur, they are usually:
Women
  • Unusual vaginal discharge due to inflammation of cervix
  • Bleeding between periods and after sex
  • Pain or burning when urinating
  • Lower tummy (pelvic) pain, especially when having sex
Men
  • Unusual discharge from the penis
  • Burning and itching at the end of the penis
  • Pain and burning when urinating

Diagnosis
Females can be tested by taking a vaginal swab. This can be done by a doctor and also at home. It is the best test for chlamydia compared to cervix or urine test. For males, the most usual test is urine test.

Chlamydia test kit is available from the Medicinesbymailbox Pharmacy.

If you are diagnosed to be infected by chlamydia, you should get any other sexual partners within the previous six months to be tested. If your sexual partner is infected and not treated, there is a possibility that chlamydia will be passed back to you even after treatment.

Alternatively, the National Chlamydia Screening Programme is available in the UK for men and women who are sexually active and under 25.

Treatment
Chlamydia can usually be treated by a short course of antibiotics, such as azithromycin and doxycycline, both available from the Medicinesbymailbox Pharmacy.

You should be treated even if you do not have symptoms as it can develop into other medical conditions such as the infection of the womb and Fallopian tubes called Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. It may also lead to reduced fertility.
