Anti-malaria advice and tablets for adults: malaria prevention for trips of 1 week to 1 year to all countries.
Every year many travellers from the UK who travel to other countries get malaria, particularly in tropical countries such as some parts of Africa, Asia ans South America. It is caused by catching a bite from an infected mosquito.
Symptoms of malaria start out with high temperature and can appear as flu-like illness. Common symptoms include fever, headache, backache, joint pain, nausea and vomiting.
Symptoms usually occur days or weeks after getting bitten, but can also take up to 1 year to appear. Therefore, you should suspect the possibility of getting malaria if you travelled to malaria risk areas within 1 year, particularly within the first 3 months.
You may also need vaccines and other health advice from a GP or travel clinic.
If you are pregnant, you should ideally avoid travelling to risk areas as your immune system may be weaker during pregnancy.
You can search for your destination on the NHS Fit For Travel website and it will display anti-malarial prevention tablets and precautions, along with other heath advice specific to the location.
Along with your anti-malarial tablets, you will also need specific measures to avoid getting bitten in the first place. Mosquitoes bites that cause malaria mostly occur in the evening. You are recommended to:
