Vitaros product information

Vitaros contains an active ingredient called alprostadil, which belongs to a group of medicines called prostaglandin E1 vasodilator. It helps to relax the blood vessels and increases blood flow to your penis when you are sexually stimulated, allowing you to maintain erection long enough to achieve satisfactory sexual activity.

How to take

Vitaros cream comes in a container with looks like a syringe. You should read the patient information leaflet for specific directions for applying the cream on the base of your penis.
The starting dose for Vitaros should be determined by your doctor (do not adjust the dose yourself), and applied about 5-30 minutes before you plan to have sex. The effect lasts for about 1-2 hours. You should not take it for more than once a day and more than 2-3 times per week.

Side effects of Vitaros

Like all medicines, Vitaros can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.

The most common side effects associated are mild burning or redness of the penis, rash and itchiness. Your partner may also experience mild vaginal itching or burning. Side effects are usually mild and resolve in a few hours but if you are concerned about any side effects of the medicine, you should speak to your doctor of pharmacist for more advice. If you experience dizziness while using Vitaros, you should avoid driving or using machinery.

Some uncommon but more serious side effects include allergic reactions with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swollen eyes, lips or mouth and rash. If you have an erection that lasts for more 4 hours, you should also get treated as soon as possible as it may cause some damage to your penis.

When ordering from Medicinesbymailbox, you may be required to fill in a series of Yes/No questionnaires to determine your suitability to the medicine. You should NOT use Vitaros without consulting your doctor if you:
  • are allergic to alprostadil

  • are taking medicines for blood clots
  • are taking any medicines for high blood pressure (you should consult your doctor as some medicines in combination can cause dangerous fall in blood pressure)
  • recently had heart problems such as stroke or heart attack, or if you have low blood pressure
  • have infection or inflammation of penis

  • If your partner is pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use Vitaros unless a condom is used as a barrier.
  • You should also not use Vitaros with any other medicine indicated for erectile dysfunction.

Patient information leaflet
