Tamiflu product information

Tamiflu capsules contain an active ingredient called oseltamivir, which belongs to a group of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors. It is an anti-viral medicine which prevents flu virus from growing in your body and helps to ease the symptoms of flu. It is used to treat flu or can also be used to prevent flu on certain circumstances.

Note that Tamiflu is not a replacement of flu vaccines as it does not provide immunity against flu and you might be prescribed both by your doctor.

How to take

Tamiflu should ideally be taken within 48 hour of catching flu. The usual dose of treating flu is to take one tablet twice daily (one in the morning and one in the evening) for 5 days. It is important to finish the whole course of treatment even if you feel better, to prevent infection from coming back.

Side effects of Tamiflu

Like all medicines, Tamiflu can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Some common side effects include headache, nausea and dizziness. It may be helpful to take Tamiflu after food to prevent nausea. Side effects are usually mild but if you are concerned, you should check with your doctor of pharmacist for advice.

Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reaction with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swollen eyes, lips or mouth and rash. Other rare side effects include convulsions and confusions. If any of these serious side effects occur, you should stop taking Tamiflu immediately and seek medical advice urgently.

The full list of side effects can be found in the patient information leaflet listed below.
