Imigran product information

Imigran tablets contain an active ingredient called sumatriptan, which belongs to a class of medicines called triptans. They act directly to control the chemical (serotonin) imbalance in your brain and help to reduce the widening of blood vessels. This helps to relieve symptoms of migraine.

There is a cheaper legal generic version of Imigran, Sumatriptan tablets, available from Medicinesbymailbox. They contain the same active ingredient and are medically identical.

How to take

The usual dose for migraine is to take one 50mg tablet, as soon as you feel a migraine attack coming. However, it can be taken at any point during an attack. Some patients may need 100mg dose if the 50mg dose is not enough to control the symptoms. It is important to take it as prescribed.

You can take a second tablet at least 2 hours after the first tablet, if you feel that your symptoms are coming back. You should not take more than 300mg within 24 hours. However, if you feel that the first tablet is ineffective, do not take a second tablet for the same attack and ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Side effects of Imigran

Like all medicines, Imigran can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.

The most common side effects associated are: pain or heaviness in the chest, feeling dizzy or sleepy, nausea and vomiting, and tingling sensations. Side effects are normally mild but if you experience intense pain in the chest or any troublesome symptoms, you should stop taking Imigran and consult a doctor urgently. It is also important that if you experience any dizziness that you avoid driving or operating machinery.

If you experience severe allergic reactions with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, eyes, or face, or an itchy rash, you should stop using Imigran and seek urgent medical advice.

The full list of side effects can be found on the patient information leaflet.
