Finasteride product information

Finasteride tablets contain finasteride which belongs to a group of medicines called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It is a cheaper generic version of Propecia and they are medically identical. It is thought that a hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), causes thinning of hair and male pattern hair loss. Finasteride helps to reduce the level of DHT in men, leading to increased hair growth and prevention of hair loss.

Finasteride is not available on the NHS.

How to take

The usual dose is to take one tablet (10mg) each day. It may take 3 to 6 months for the full effect to develop.

Side effects of Finasteride

Side effects are uncommon but it may cause reduced sex drive and inability to have erections. You should stop taking Finasteride and seek urgent medical advice if you experience symptoms of severe allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, eyes or mouth, or a rash, or if you experience depressive thoughts.

There has been a few rare reports on association of Finasteride with breast cancer in men. It is important that if you experience any pains or lumps in your breast area, or any discharge from your nipple, that you seek immediate medical advice.

The full list of side effects can be found from the patient information leaflet attached below.

When ordering from Medicinesbymailbox, you may be asked to answer a series of Yes/No questionnaire to determine your suitability to the medicine. You should not take Finasteride before consulting a doctor if you:
  • Are allergic to finasteride
  • Are a women (this medicine will only work for men)
  • Are already taking finasteride for a condition of the prostate called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)
