Doxycycline is used to treat many infections
caused by bacteria as it is anti-bacterial. It is commonly used to prevent malaria infection. Malaria is caused by the bite of an infected mosquito which spreads the malaria parasite, P.falciparum. These components kill the parasites in the blood.
Like all medicines, doxycycline can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.
The most common side
effects include stomach problems such as indigestion and tummy pain, diarrhoea, headache and thrush. Some of the side effects can be reduced by taking Doxycyline after food and by standing or sitting upright. If you are concerned about any of this, you may speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
It may also increase your skin sensitivity to sunlight. It is recommended that a sunscreen with high sun protection factor is used.
If you think you experience a severe allergic reaction with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swollen lips or face, and a rash, you should stop taking doxycycline immediately and seek medical advice urgently.
