Cilest is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing 2 types of hormones that are produced in your body to regulate your monthly cycles: a progestrogen called norgestimate and an oestrogen hormone called ethinylestradiol. Together, they help to prevent pregnancy.
If you vomit or have severe diarrhoea within 2 hours of taking the pill, you should take another dose as the absorption of drug might be affected.
Like all medicines, Brevinor can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Some common side effects associated are feeling sick, stomach cramps, headache and irregular vaginal bleeding. These side effects are usually mild but if you are concerned about them, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist for more advice.
Combined contraceptive pills are occassionally associated with the risk of blood clots. If you experience symptoms such as swelling or tenderness in stomach, coughing up blood, pain in chest, painful veins in legs or sudden unexplained headache, you should stop taking Cilest and seek urgent medical advice.
There is also a small risk of breast cancer associated with the pill. However, it is shown that if women stop taking the pill, 10 years later the risk will be the same for women who do not take the pill. You should know how to recognise signs of breast cancer such as changes in the nipple or any lumps that you can feel on your breast. However, research shows that combined oral contraceptives protect against ovary and endometrium cancer.
