Azithromycin product information

Azithromycin belongs to a group of medicine called macrolide antibiotic and is used to treat many infections, including chlamydia.

How to take

The usual dose for chlamydia is one dose of 1000mg (2 500mg tablets). The tablets should be taken with a drink of water.

Side effects of azithromycin

Like all medicines, azithromycin can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.

The most common side effects are usually mild and include diarrhoea, tummy pain, nausea and loose wind (flatulence). If you are affected by dizziness, you should avoid driving or operating machinery.

However, if you develop severe allergic reactions with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swollen eyes, face or lips and rash or itching, you should stop taking azithromycin immediately and seek urgent medical advice.

During a consultation with Medicinesbymailbox, you will be asked to complete an online assessment questionnaire to determine your suitability for the medication. You should NOT take azithromycin without consulting a GP if you:
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a sensitivity to azithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic
  • Have liver problems, kidney problems or heart problems
  • Suffer from a disease which causes muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis

Some medications can influence the way Azithromycin works and vice versa, such as indigestion remedies and blood thinning medication warfarin. Ergotamine (used for migraine) should not be taken together with azithromycin as it may cause serious side effects to occur. If you are unsure about your current medication, you should check with a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after if indigestion remedies are taken.
