Doxycycline product information

Doxycycline is used to treat many infections caused by bacteria as it is anti-bacterial. It is commonly used to prevent malaria infection. Malaria is caused by the bite of an infected mosquito which spreads the malaria parasite, P.falciparum. These components kill the parasites in the blood.

Note: no anti-malarial tablet is 100% effective against malaria and you may need additional measures to prevent getting bitten by infected mosquitoes. Visit our page for malaria for specific medical information.

How to take

You may need to start taking Doxycycline for a specific period before and after entering malaria risk areas. The usual dose is to take 1 capsule daily starting from 1-2 days before entering malaria risk areas, and continue daily until 4 weeks after leaving the malarial area. It is important to finish the full course of antibiotic to ensure adequate protection.
Doxycycline should always be taken after food and with plenty of fluids, preferably standing or sitting up. It should not be taken immediately before going to bed or lying down to reduce to likelihood of acid reflux symptoms. Do not take Doxycycline with alcohol.

Side effects of doxycycline

Like all medicines, doxycycline can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them.

The most common side effects include stomach problems such as indigestion and tummy pain, diarrhoea, headache and thrush. Some of the side effects can be reduced by taking Doxycyline after food and by standing or sitting upright. If you are concerned about any of this, you may speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

It may also increase your skin sensitivity to sunlight. It is recommended that a sunscreen with high sun protection factor is used.

If you think you experience a severe allergic reaction with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, swollen lips or face, and a rash, you should stop taking doxycycline immediately and seek medical advice urgently.

During a consultation with Medicinesbymailbox, you will be asked to complete an online assessment questionnaire to determine your suitability for anti-malarial medication. You should NOT take doxycycline without consulting a GP if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a sensitivity to tetracycline antibiotics
  • Have liver problems or kidney problems
  • Suffer from diseases called myasthenia gravis or SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus)

Some medications can influence the way Doxycycline works and vice versa, such as indigestion remedies, iron supplements, blood thinning medication warfarin and oral contraceptives. If you are unsure about your current medication, you should check with a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
